William Louis Abbott Papers

Naturalist, Explorer & Field Scientist

Organised by the Smithsonian's Department of Anthropology, the papers in William Louis Abbott’s collection include a record of Abbott’s collection. These include his correspondences to the Smithsonian Institution from 1892-1917, his correspondences to his mother and sister from 1887-1923, notes, maps, illustrations of artefacts, manuscripts, lists of objects and photographs taken by Abbott during his expeditions.

In this letter, dated 4 September 9, 1902, Abbott writes from Singapore to his Susan Abbott mother. Here he mentions about the Orang Laut, the aboriginal peoples of Malayan Peninsula and made reference to Mr. C. B. Kloss and a drought in Singapore.

This letter is part of the series that contain the letters William Louis Abbott wrote to his family from 1887-1923. Arranged chronologically, it included predominately letters he wrote to his mother, Susan F. Abbott, and his sister, Gertrude Abbott. However, there are a few letters that were addressed to his sister and brother-in-law, "Dollie" and "Val" de Calry.
